Empowering the Next Generation of Fire Safety Professionals

At Drax360, part of the Obsequio Group, we are committed to developing the next generation of fire safety professionals. Apprenticeships play a crucial role in shaping the future of our industry, offering hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications, and a pathway to long-term success.

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Sam Maloney, Apprentice Project Engineer, as he shares his journey into the fire industry and how his apprenticeship is setting him up for a successful career.

Meet Sam Maloney, Apprentice Project Engineer at Drax360

Choosing a Career in Fire Safety

For Sam, an apprenticeship in the fire industry was the perfect opportunity to gain practical experience while earning a qualification. He always wanted a hands-on, active role, and fire safety stood out as an industry where he could develop his skills, build confidence, and work directly with experienced professionals.

“I wanted to gain experience in the field while also earning a qualification. This path aligns with my interests, and I value the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals.”

Why Drax360?

When researching apprenticeship opportunities, Sam was drawn to Drax360’s rapid growth and strong reputation within the fire industry. He saw the company’s commitment to working with prestigious clients and recognised it as an organisation where he could grow, progress, and be valued as an employee.

“I was intrigued by how much the company is progressing and knew this was a place where I could develop and be part of something bigger.”

A Day in the Life of an Apprentice Project Engineer

Sam’s day-to-day responsibilities involve working alongside experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience with different fire safety systems, and learning the intricacies of first and second fix installations. He is guided by senior engineers who provide mentorship and ensure that he is learning industry best practices.

“I shadow our experienced lead engineers who really care about my success. They show me different systems, let me be hands-on, and ensure I’m learning the correct way to work in line with British Standards.”

Overcoming Challenges & Developing Key Skills

Like any apprenticeship, the journey comes with its challenges. For Sam, the most demanding aspect has been keeping up with the status of fire alarm systems and ensuring that every action taken aligns with compliance requirements. However, with guidance from his mentors and a focus on problem-solving, he has learned to adapt quickly.

“I must be aware that any mistake can cause faults and delays, so checking each panel regularly and seeking guidance from engineers has been crucial.”

Through his apprenticeship, Sam has developed problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and confidence in working with clients. He has also learned the importance of time management, breaking tasks into smaller steps to balance learning with hands-on work.

The Rewarding Side of Apprenticeships

For Sam, the most rewarding part of his apprenticeship is knowing that his work directly contributes to the safety and security of others.

“Knowing that what I do matters – that it could potentially save lives – is an incredible feeling. There is great satisfaction in knowing my work makes a difference.”

As his role evolves, Sam is taking on greater responsibilities and gaining more trust from his colleagues. He has already begun completing tasks independently, preparing himself for the next stage of his career.

Career Aspirations & Advice for Future Apprentices

Looking ahead, Sam’s goal is to become a fully qualified fire safety engineer, using his apprenticeship as a stepping stone to gain industry expertise and build professional connections. His advice to those considering an apprenticeship in fire safety?

“The fire safety industry offers a rewarding and fulfilling career with long-term security. There are always opportunities for growth and development, and it’s a great industry to be part of.”
